This is other smartphone of Bold series from Research In Motion (RIM). Formerly known as the Onyx 2, BlackBerry Bold 9780 was announced in October 2010 and released in November 2010. The smartphone was produced as the replacement of the Bold 9700 (Onyx) and the phone comes with many improvements in features and capability. Below are the specifications of this device.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 runs on 2G Network (GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz), EDGE, and 3G Network of HSDPA (850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz). The handset has the same measurement with the 9700 model i.e. 109 mm in height, 60 mm in width, 14 mm in depth and 122 grams in weight.

The design of Onyx 2 is not too different with the first Onyx. Both were using the touch-sensitive optical track pad and soft keys for its navigation method and of course the typical QWERTY piano-like keyboard for convenient typing activity. The BlackBerry Bold 9780 now comes with the better and more interactive interface since it uses the BlackBerry OS 6. This operating system also delivers a great acceleration and performance rather than the previous Onyx that still uses the BB OS 5 version.

The use of BB OS 6 version also affects to the default web browser’s capability. Thanks to the WebKit platform supports, the web browser is now more flexible and amazing as well. It has a smoother look of the menu structure and it also supports for flash that delivers the almost similar capability of desktop PC. The activity of web browsing can be more interesting with the feature of multi-page display.

The device is equipped with a 624 MHz processor and it has a bigger memory with 512 MB RAM compared with the Onyx with only 256 MB of RAM. The camera of BlackBerry Bold 9780 has been enhanced to 5 megapixels with auto-focus, LED flash, check quality and it is able to shoot picture with the maximum quality of 2592 x 1944 pixels. The smartphone also comes with internal storage of 256 MB and micro SD card up to 32GB (2GB card included).

Other features include the BlackBerry maps, Document editor (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF), Media player that supports for MP3/WMA/AAC+ audio formats, Video player that supports for DivX/WMV/XviD/3gp formats, organizer, voice memo/dial, and predictive text input.

In general, The BlackBerry Bold 9780 can be differed with the original Onyx in its user interface, operating system and the camera capability. The improvements of software were performed appropriately to this smartphone but unfortunately there are no significant changes in the hardware compared with the 9700 model. [IS]
