Planning a hike is a great experience for any nature enthusiast. The most important point here is that you go ready to face a challenging situation that could happen during your travel, depending upon the kind and the intensity of the hike that you are planning for. For example, you will not have to worry too much if you are getting help from experts but if not you should really look out for yourself. Here are some of the main things that you need to think about when going for a hike.
Is Everything Working?
One of the main pointers that you should not ignore attending to is checking and double checking if all your gear actually works and is in good condition. You should do this a few days before your hike and make sure that you even have a stock of extra batteries and the likes should the one that you have suddenly stop working. It is always best to have a little extra than a little less in such situations.
Are You Sure Of Your Plans and Have You Shared Them with the Others?
First of all, you need to be very sure about your plans. If you are going to travel on the larapinta trail discuss this with your hiking group as well so that everybody is aware of where you’re going and will be prepared. Do not keep all the information to yourself and then share them with others during the last minute. That will not help you or them. Also make sure that every plan and all the logistics are confirmed and assured before you leave. Of course there is always the chance that there will be changes but going ready is always a good thing.
Never Wear Anything Cotton in Cold Weather
Unless you are going to trek to a place where you cannot wear any other breathable material, try and avoid wearing cotton as much as possible. The fabric can be very prone to tear and if it suddenly gets cold, you will be in shivers. Always try to pick clothing items that are comfortable and breathable but also has more strength to protect your skin and to keep you warm if needed.
Food and Water Should Be Taken
You should stock up on food and water before you go on the hike. Usually, hikers who are seasoned follow a rule of thumb in taking about half a pound of food per day and about a pint of water for every two to three miles. Even if you may not be able to carry all that based on how long and far your hike is, try to stock up on easily consumable and high energy high nutrition food items. Share it with your friends and carry it so that there will be enough for everybody. Do not take easily perishable food items with you or those that will need extensive preparation time. You should be able to eat and drink anywhere at any given time with minimal to no cooking facilities.Â
