But, in the near future, it is hard to say if the Apple’s iOS did not have the features that match its competitors. Let’s take a look at below release history of Apple’s operating system.

First OS release (v.1.0)

This first version of iOS was available for the original 2G iPhone with standard and pre-installed applications from Apple, such as Safari, iPod, Messages, Mail, Phone Calendar, Photos, Camera, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Notes, Clock, Calculator, Settings and the iTunes application.

Second major OS release (v.2.0)

The iPhone 3G is the first Apple’s Smartphone to run on this operating system. But, the devices running on earlier version are upgradable to this version. The version of this iOS introduces the App Store, making third-party applications available to the iPhone and iPod touch.

Third major OS release (v.3.0)

The iPhone 3GS is the Smartphone available with this version of iOS. It was released on June 17, 2009. This release has been added with much requested features such as copy and paste and Multimedia Messaging feature.

Fourth major OS release (v.4.0)

iOS 4 was made available to the public for the iPhone and iPod touch on June 21, 2010. It was announced with a large number of improvements that allows the iPhone to catch up to the Android competition. There are a lot of new impressive features i.e. Multitasking, Bluetooth keyboards support, iBooks application to read e-books, a unified inbox for managing multiple email accounts in a single folder, multiple exchange accounts support, camera improvements including 5 times digital zoom and tap to focus video, folder organization of applications so you can put a number of similar applications in a single folder, wallpaper customization, improved camera and video editing and enterprise improvements for business environments.

Fifth major OS Release (v.5.0)

In this release, there are a lot of improvements made such as the Notification Center, which presents all the latest information updates from the applications used. Apple also has made the integration of Twitter into every feature in iOS. With a single sign on feature, iPhone or iPod Touch users can simply send a photo once finished photographing or directly from the gallery.

Another feature is iMessage. This is a chat service that allows users of iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad communicate with each other with the push message. Like the Blackberry Messenger it allows users to send text messages, photos, contacts, and even videos, as well as create a group chat.

The biggest change is the iCloud service that provides synchronization of cloud-based content. In addition to the main additional features, this version of iOS also provides features that make it easier for users. For example, split keyboard and new additional feature on the camera application. Message or reminder is not only integrated with the calendar but also the location of the user resides. There are also applications NewsStand as a place to access digital content magazines and newspapers. For great internet connectivity, the features of Safari mobile browser are also being improved.
