Xperia is the range of Sony’s touch screen smartphones. The series of Xperia family is manufactured by Sony (previously known as Sony Ericsson) to get involved in the competition in the segment of touch screen phones. The term ‘Xperia’ is derived from the word 'experience' which was used in the branding of the X1. As of 2011 all of this phone models manufactured under this family name have been categorized as smartphones. An exception would be the Xperia Pureness which is the only device that does not the capability of smartphone. It is a translucent phone without camera that will be sold by selected retailers in selected cities.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 emerged as the first variant that announced to public. Released in 2008, it intended to fill the widening gap of smartphones as other competitors were producing high-end smartphone devices such as HTC and Apple. The X2 was released in the following year, which included an 8.1 MP camera and included Wifi and GPS. Both run on Windows Mobile Operating System. This Android phone praised on its design, but its minus was the outdated version of Android 1.6 at a time while competitors were on Android 2.1.
The successors of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 are the X10 mini and the X10 mini pro. Both were the miniature versions of the X10. At that time, these two smartphones were welcomed with good response on the market and proved to be very popular as there were no other strong competitors on the market which were as small as the two.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a handheld game console smartphone produced by Sony Ericsson. Under the Xperia smartphone brand running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, this smartphone is the first device to be a part of the PlayStation Certified program which means that it is able to play PlayStation Suite games. The device was originally thought to carry the PlayStation branding, though this has been clarified to be a certification of being part of the PlayStation Certified program.
The next models of Sony Ericsson Xperia family are Xperia Pro and Xperia Active. The first model is a touch screen slider phone and is billed as a quick-messaging smartphone. The second model is a rugged sports-centric touch screen phone and will be available in the third quarter of 2011.
